How to quit smoking: a complete method to stop for good

To quit smoking for good, you can choose a realistic strategy, set a quit date, anticipate high-risk situations and line up the right support. In 2025, almost 1.2 million people in France had nicotine replacement products or stop-smoking medication reimbursed, up 1.2% on the previous year.

This guide covers the practical steps to stop smoking, the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, the benefits of quitting and useful tips for your smoker profile.

Key takeaways

  • There is no single universal way to quit smoking: success depends on how dependent you are, how motivated you are and the support you put in place.
  • Cravings peak between the 2nd and 3rd day, then become less intense and less frequent.
  • Preparing your quit day over a week improves your chances of holding on and stopping for good: choosing your strategy, getting rid of your packs, enlisting the support of those close to you.
  • A slip does not mean failure: analysing the trigger and adjusting your plan lets you get back on track without losing everything.
  • Asking for help (a doctor, a tobacco specialist, a specialist centre) greatly increases your chances of quitting compared with going it alone. You can bring in this support at any stage.

How to quit smoking in 5 steps

To stop smoking for good, you can follow this sequence:

  1. Take stock of how much you smoke, your triggers and your level of dependence.
  2. Set a date 7 to 14 days away, neither too soon nor too far off.
  3. Choose a strategy: stopping outright, cutting down gradually, nicotine replacement, professional support, a stimulation-based method.
  4. Prepare your surroundings: get rid of packs, lighters and ashtrays, and tell the people close to you.
  5. Put support in place from day one to get through the peak of cravings without giving in.

A written, dated plan remains the most useful tip for stopping smoking: it turns the wish to give up tobacco into a concrete plan of action. You can write it in 10 minutes to clarify your steps.

Why quitting smoking is hard but possible

Smoking combines nicotine dependence with habits rooted in everyday life. This twofold mechanism explains why willpower alone is not enough for the vast majority of smokers who want to stop.

Nicotine acts on the brain’s reward circuits within seconds. A regular smoker feels cravings within 30 to 60 minutes of their last cigarette, which keeps the habit going.

Habits keep dependence alive long after the chemical withdrawal: the morning coffee, the break at work, a night out with friends, the end of a meal. Each routine creates a trigger for the urge to smoke, independent of physical cravings.

A one-off slip does not cancel out your effort to quit. It is information to analyse, not a moral failing.

Assess your smoker profile before you quit

Before your quit date, you can ask yourself three key questions. The answers will shape the strategy you choose to stop smoking:

  • How many cigarettes do you smoke a day? Above 10 a day, your level of dependence often justifies nicotine replacement or professional support.
  • When do you light your first cigarette of the day? If it is within 30 minutes of waking up, your physical dependence is high.
  • Why do you want to stop now? Health, money, pregnancy, loved ones, sport: concrete, personal reasons like these hold up better than general principles.

Keep a diary for 5 to 7 days: time, context and how strong the urge was. Observing yourself beforehand reveals the habits that will be hardest to break.

Choose a strategy that suits your profile

There is no single right way to stop smoking: the approach that works depends on your smoker profile, your motivation and your personal history with tobacco.

Stopping outright or gradually: stopping outright gives better results for smokers who are highly motivated and well prepared. Cutting down gradually suits people who feel anxious about giving everything up at once, provided they set a real final quit date at the end of the process.

Nicotine replacement products (patches, gum, lozenges, inhalers, sprays) make up for physical cravings without the toxic substances in smoke. In 2025, oral forms accounted for 63.2% of sales, compared with 55.7% in 2019, while patches grew by 5.2%.

Behavioural support from a tobacco specialist or a trained doctor can help you spot your triggers and rebuild habits without cigarettes. This approach works well alongside nicotine replacement.

Stimulation-based methods such as laser to stop smoking aim to reduce urges and cravings by stimulating specific points on the ear and nose. They can complement a quit-smoking plan, particularly for people who do not want to use nicotine replacement.

Stop-smoking medication such as varenicline is still available on prescription. This option is one to discuss with your doctor.

No method suits every smoker: the best advice is to weigh up your dependence profile and your history with tobacco to choose the approach you can stick with over time. Several options can also be combined without any difficulty.

Prepare your quit day: your 7-day plan

Structured preparation over a week improves your chances of holding on beyond the first 72 hours.

StageActions
Day -7 to day -4Observe your habits, choose your strategy, book an appointment with a professional if needed
Day -3 to day -2Tell the people close to you, remove packs from your home, car and office
Day -1Buy your nicotine replacement products or schedule your first support session
Quit dayStart your chosen support as soon as you wake up, avoid your usual triggers for 48 hours
First weekKeep a diary of your cravings, vary your breaks, ask for active support

The start is the time when cravings are strongest. Planning ahead for the first 3 high-risk situations (morning coffee, the 10 am break, getting home) helps you avoid most slips in the first 24 hours.

What to do when cravings strike

An urge to smoke rarely lasts more than 3 to 5 minutes. Getting past this peak is the key to avoiding a slip and staying smoke-free for good.

You can use these reflexes to help your body get through it:

  • Breathe slowly for 1 minute (breathe in for 4 seconds, out for 6 seconds).
  • Drink a glass of water or a hot cup of tea.
  • Walk for 5 minutes, change rooms or step outside for some fresh air.
  • Keep your hands busy to replace the gesture: a rubber band on your wrist, a stress ball, writing.
  • Chew nicotine gum or sugar-free gum.
  • Call someone close to you or a remote support service such as Tabac Info Service in France.

The urge builds and then fades. The longer you hold out without giving in, the more manageable the next one becomes. This simple tip helps most smokers get through the first 48 hours without giving in.

Handle everyday high-risk situations

Some situations trigger an almost automatic urge in former smokers. Anticipating them defuses around 80% of slips.

  • After coffee or a meal: switch activity straight away (go for a walk, do the washing-up, brush your teeth).
  • When stressed or tired: a cigarette does not relieve stress, it relieves the craving it created. Opt for 5 minutes of breathing or a short walk instead.
  • In the evening, with alcohol or around smokers: cut down on alcohol for the first few weeks, warn your friends and keep physically away from smoking areas.
  • At work or in the car: replace the cigarette break with a drink of water or a short walk. Air out the car and remove the ashtray.

Changing habits takes 3 to 4 weeks on average before it becomes automatic. This phase of change is the hardest, but also the most decisive, part of quitting smoking. You can keep a journal to track your progress.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms: what to expect

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms follow a well-known timeline. Putting a name to them helps you get through them without panicking.

  • First few hours: strong urges, irritability, reduced concentration.
  • Days 1 to 3: peak of physical nicotine cravings, sleep problems, food cravings, sometimes coughing and phlegm as the airways clear out.
  • Weeks 1 to 4: urges become less frequent, tiredness fades, taste and smell gradually return.
  • Months 1 to 3: mental habits loosen their grip. The main risk becomes slipping up at a party or in a stressful situation.

If symptoms become unmanageable (severe insomnia, marked anxiety, persistent low mood), ask your doctor for advice. Adjusting your strategy or getting medical support is possible at any time.

The benefits of quitting smoking

The benefits of quitting begin within hours of your last cigarette and build up over time. These tangible effects on your health help keep you motivated not to start smoking again.

  • 8 hours: the level of carbon monoxide in your blood drops and oxygen levels return to normal.
  • 48 hours: taste and smell come back and your breath improves.
  • 2 weeks to 3 months: your breathing improves, and walking and climbing stairs become easier again.
  • 1 year: the risk of heart attack falls sharply, a major health gain from staying smoke-free.
  • Money: a daily pack at €12 adds up to around €4,380 saved over a year.

These health benefits alone make the effort worthwhile. Feeling them becomes a powerful driver to stop smoking for good and not pick up cigarettes again.

When to get support and which kind to choose

Asking for professional advice is not a sign of weakness but a matter of probability. Smokers who get support are far more successful at quitting than those who try alone.

Your GP remains your first port of call for health matters: they can assess your dependence, prescribe nicotine replacement products (reimbursed in France) or varenicline, and refer you to a tobacco specialist if needed. You can raise the subject at any appointment.

A tobacco specialist offers specialised follow-up (3 to 6 appointments on average), with personalised adjustment of nicotine replacement and behavioural work to help you hold firm against a long-standing smoking habit.

Remote support services (helplines, apps, personalised text message programmes) complement in-person support. Interactive, personalised programmes improve engagement compared with simple generic messages.

In France, the public service Tabac Info Service (3989) also provides free advice and text message follow-up for smokers who want to quit without paying.

Getting support early, whatever form it takes, remains the most powerful way to avoid a slip in the first 72 hours.

Laser auricular reflexology offers a complementary approach to reducing urges and cravings. This gentle, non-medical method, with no needles and no substances, uses a soft low-intensity laser to stimulate reflex points on the ear, along with a few points on the nose, and can be combined with any medical follow-up you may have.

Beyond the laser session itself, support plays an essential role in quitting successfully. At Reset Laser, everyone we support receives personalised follow-up and can contact their practitioner if they face difficulties, doubts or a passing urge to smoke again. Combined with our 12 months of support, this follow-up is one of the pillars of the Reset Laser method.

How to get back on track after a slip

Having a cigarette does not cancel out your effort. What matters is how you react in the following 24 hours.

  • Analyse the exact trigger (place, context, emotion).
  • Adjust your approach: step up your nicotine replacement, avoid the situation, alert someone who supports you.
  • Get back on course with the very next urge you resist, without waiting for a new “next Monday”.

Relapse is part of the learning process for most smokers who eventually quit for good. You can ask your doctor for advice on adapting your plan. Each attempt improves your chances next time.

In summary

Quitting smoking rests on three levers: a strategy suited to your profile, practical preparation for your quit day and support in place to get through the peak of cravings. The best method is the one you can actually stick with over time.

Take action with Reset Laser

Quitting smoking is a journey that takes preparation and support. If you are still unsure, the next step is to see your doctor or find out what a stop-smoking laser session involves, to judge whether this approach suits your smoker profile. At Reset Laser, a session lasts about one hour and comes with 12 months of support: a free additional session if you relapse within the year.

FAQ: How to quit smoking

An urge lasts 3 to 5 minutes: slow breathing, a glass of water, a short walk or keeping your hands busy is enough in most cases to help you hold on. Nicotine gum or an inhaler acts on physical cravings within a few minutes. This tip still works even after several weeks without smoking.

Cravings peak between the 48th and 72nd hour, as nicotine is cleared from the body. After that, their intensity gradually decreases, even though urges triggered by habits persist for a few weeks for most smokers.

Stopping outright gives better results for smokers who are ready and motivated. Cutting down gradually helps smokers who are anxious or highly dependent, provided they set a real final quit date at the end.

Gaining 2 to 4 kg is common in the first 6 months, due to the return of appetite and changes in metabolism. Regular physical activity and keeping an eye on snacking limit this gain. With the Reset Laser method, which aims to ease cravings and reduce the need to compensate with food, weight gain generally stays limited.

Analyse the trigger, adjust your strategy and get back to quitting with the very next cigarette you resist. A slip does not cancel out your effort: most smokers who succeed have made several attempts.

Physical cravings ease within 1 to 3 weeks of stopping smoking. Urges linked to habits become less intense over 1 to 3 months. After that, it is mainly parties and stressful situations that remain risky for former smokers.
